What a summer it's been. I've been going non stop since early July when Rhea & I traveled to Chelmsford Ontario, We entertained & I judged the fiddle contest there backed up by Paul & Melika Lemelin. It was a blast and I felt so comfortable with their professional back up. I hope to play more with them in the future.
Then traveled back to Alberta and played a "Cowboy Fest" in Vilna. What a nice festival they have there and I hope to go back and do it again sometime.
The next day kicked off the 6th edition on "Camp Calvin". It went for 2 weeks this year and it was amazing. The atmosphere was wonderful. Fiddle campers traveled from many of our provinces and some states, the furthest being Boston. Check out Camp Calvin for next years dates and info. This year's is getting rave reviews from the participants and instructors.
Then it was off to the "Blueberry Bluegrass Festival" in Stony Plain Alberta. We did a show on each of the 3 days there. Shared the stage with the Quebe Sisters, Rhonda Vincent, Michael Martin Murphy, The Good Brothers, The Gibsdon Brothers & many more. This is an annual bluegrass and country festival that you should check out. One of the biggest bluegrass gathering in all of Canada if not the biggest. www.blueberrybluegrass.com
Then it was off to John Arcand's Fiddle Fest near Saskatoon Saskatchewan. Always a great time and John & Vicky do such a wonderful event for fiddlers and fans of the fiddle.
Following John's I traveled to the Ottawa Valley and taught at the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Camp and then entertained at the CGMF Championship following the camp. The events were in the Ottawa area. The Grand Masters are doing their part in uniting all Canadian Fiddlers a showcasing the various styles of fiddle music our country has to offer. Check out their website and learn more about them. In 2013, the championship leaves Ottawa and travels west to Saskatoon.
After the CGM, I traveled to Pembroke for their huge fiddle contest and gathering. I believe this was the 37th annual for Pembroke. I first went there in 1992 as a guest entertainer and in 1993 was hired as a judge. I continued judging right up to and including 2010. In 2011, I decided I needed a break and stepped away from the judging table but have still gone back to Pembroke 2 years in a row as a spectator and avid jammer. It truly gets in your blood and is an event you shouldn't miss if you're a fiddle fan. Fiddle Park has over 1000 motor homes, trailers & tents and the jams are endless.
Then yesterday I took my portable recording studio to Embrun Ontario and recorded Denis Brisson, a fellow fiddler that has been playing for many years and has numerous recording already. I recorded a CD for him in 2008 and now 4 years later, he has a pile of new tunes so it was time for a new CD. So I'll take his fiddle tracks and Germain Leduc's piano tracks back home where I'll add more instruments to the mix and finish it off for him.
This brings my summer 2012 to a close. Now I get to travel home to my beautiful wife, Rhea. Ah....life is good.
