In 1988, when I taught at my 1st fiddle camp at Emma Lake Saskatchewan, the coordinator, Sandy Cameron, asked me to do a theory class. Not being a trained musician, I felt I was not qualified but he insisted. I went back to my cabin and worked on it. What I found, was a common denominator in the fiddle tunes. I was amazed at how simple it was. After this discovery, I found it so much easier to find the correct notes quicker and not play the wrong notes that we all tend to hit a lot when we are learning new tunes.
In this lesson, I pick apart the “Key of G”. Then I teach you a couple of tunes in this key so you can see the relation to the “Key of G”. Now you are ready to take what you’ve learned from this key and apply it to all the other keys. It is exactly the same. When you understand the concept, it becomes very easy. You still have to practice though.
If you don’t know how to build a house, it is very hard, but learn how to build a house and it becomes easy. Same thing here. I teach you the foundation of all tunes and you’re well on your way to becoming an accomplished fiddler. I’m very confident by going over this lesson that you will have the know-how when it comes to learning tunes. Happy Fiddling Calvin Vollrath |
